A Direct Assault on India’s Sovereignty

The recent actions of the United States, particularly toward India in the aftermath of developments in post-Maduro Venezuela, constitute a direct and brazen affront to India’s sovereignty and independence. After capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and picking them into U.S. custody, Washington has increasingly begun to behave as though India were a colony or a subservient state— better to say  a servant state like a peon  to obey the orders and function as a compliant  state in service of American interests.

Such conduct reflects a dangerous, unacceptable and perverted mindset that undermines the dignity of a sovereign nation of 150 crore people, a pathfinder into non alignment  movement. Considering his absurd and inconsistent statement , one is forced to conclude Trump must dissociate himself from being a lunatic and a disequilibrium person.

President Donald Trump must restrain himself from indulging in paranoid and delirious rhetoric, such as declaring that it is the duty of Prime Minister Modi to “make him happy,” or claiming that he is “offended and angry” because India chose to purchase Russian oil—adding arrogantly that “Modi knows it very well.” In the same breadth , he speaks , Modi is my deep friend , it suggests that lunacy is abound.  These words reduce India to the status of a mere shop and Trump to that of a shop owner, free to hurl abuse and issue any thing in the name of commands to an employee or karmachari. This jab is alien in the domain of diplomacy during the cold war and post cold war period .  To be precise, this vulgarity is wholly bereft of diplomacy and violates every norm of civilised foreign relations for which US widely is acclaimed from Widrow Wilson or Morgantheu time . Decency, etiquette, and sobriety appear anathema to this gentleman, who seems instinctively inclined to substitute reasoned discourse with crude and meaningless diatribe, similar to a rogue state.  The mindset that he has, has  no place in relations between two sovereign nations. His words and conduct suggest that he speaks not as the president of a nation grounded in history and responsibility, but as one unmoored and ungroomed from both—bereft of historical consciousness and institutional restraint. His words and behaviour indicate that he is a president of no country, no history etc. He is a history less man speaking with self.

The United States now brazenly and daringly projects itself as the self-appointed guardian better speak boss of the world, extending its reach even to Venezuela . In what appears to be a larger geopolitical conspiracy and power,  U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright nakedly stated that after removing Maduro, the United States intends to sell Venezuelan oil to India. This is nothing short of barbaric and brutal overreach having scant regard for the constitutional framework of the concerned country , similar to proud of another’s wealth.  Such plundering by the United States is nothing new; in fact plundering the resources , economy of other countries are in their blood ie since Second World War II  however, statements of this nature are bizarre and reckless and no president before him could stoop down to that nasty and uncouth level in uttering this . To bulldoze the vanquished with such a dictatorial attitude and brawl are befitting to Trump and his yore Besant Scott or Wright.  i

It is astonishing that an indigenous Indian refiner under the supervision  of Petroleum Ministry such as Reliance Industries must seek permission from the United States to purchase oil from Venezuela instead of sourcing crude from Russia’s Rosneft or Lukoil. That Mukesh Ambani is gradually tilting towards US for requisite approval for crude is gradually coming into light , no matter how subdued are they!  India was the third largest importer of Venezuelian crude oil before US penal  tariff came into effect. In that period , 4 lakhs bpd were imported from that state. From January to April, 63000 bpd were used to be imported. US interdicted the supply to India from Venezuela. It was the last container from Venezuela reached India in May last year . Now ‘Trump’ will export Venezualian oil to India . Oh, what a great mockery!  Earlier, India had firmly resisted U.S. pressure to stop purchasing Russian oil, even in the face of punitive tariffs reportedly reaching 50% is not to all , and despite this economic coercion, India quietly but resolutely continued buying Russian crude in defense of its national interest and energy security.

Today, Indo-U.S. relations appear to have reached a historic low which India did never experience in the past. The unilateral imposition of an additional 25% tariff by the Trump administration—on top of an existing 25%—as punishment for India’s Russian oil purchases has caused deep unease and resentment. Such actions are not those of a partner, but of a worse bully  seeking submission and subjugation .

United States

The United States now , went to the length,  claims to have established firm control over Venezuela and asserts that it will sell Venezuelan oil to India. This resembles economic robbery disguised as an “interim agreement.” Under this arrangement, Venezuela is reportedly to supply 3 to 5 crore barrels of high-quality fuel oil, which the U.S. would sell at market rates while retaining the revenue—estimated by oil economists to be around $200 billion. Reliance has possibly understood that in the changed scenario of toppling and kidnapping of elected government of Maduoro by US and attacking a Russian War ship in Atlantic,  Modi government can’t withstand the sustained pressure unleashed by Trump, continuing purchase of ‘Venezuelian oil is comparatively a safer bid.   ,

America, acting as a self-proclaimed global custodian, is attempting to determine who can trade oil, with whom, and on what terms. Adding insult to injury, U.S. officials mockingly claim that profits from the oil trade will eventually be transferred to Venezuela, even as control and revenues remain firmly in American hands. In other tone, Trump says that the revenues from Venezuelan oil shall be invested in the soil of that country for the welfare of the Venezuelan people .

This is not diplomacy. It is coercion , to say the least. And it raises serious questions about the future of global sovereignty in a world increasingly shaped by unilateral power. leran more
